Painted Desert at Sunrise • Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona
I don't often get this abstract in my work, but I was inspired by the concept of layers. So much of the park seems to be about layers — the layered hills of the bentonite badlands — eroded layers that reveal petrified wood, fossils, and archeological sites — limestone with a natural varnish layer that ancient people chipped away to create petroglyphs. I took the colors of a painted desert sunrise and "stretched" them a bit to create this layered piece.
