| I think it's always fun to get to know the artist. When you know the artist it adds some depth to their work helps you see a bit through the artist's eyes.
One way of doing that is to find out what other things he/she is interested in. I obviously enjoy nature. A good hike is great opportunity to gather images and it's just plain old good therapy. I've made it a point to get to know a lot of the plants, birds, and critters that live around where I live. I've purchased lots of field guides and even a set of CD's with bird calls. Another area of interest to me is history especially WWII and aviation history. My father was a WWII vet fighting his way through France in Patton's third army until his capture near Metz. He survived 6 months in Oflag 64 in Poland. I think my childhood imaginations of what his experiences must have been gave me the history bug. My interest in aviation must have come from imaginings about the aesthetics of flight. I faintly remember watching the Saturday TV series "Sky King" and being thrilled when I received a plastic model of a plane that looked like the "Songbird." I have collected the entire "Epic of Flight" series of Time/Life books and more often than not will look for novels or biographies that involve flying or flyers. A particularly notable experience along the way was an opportunity to fly in an open cockpit Stearman and go through a whole acrobatic routine (camera in-hand of course). Great fun!!! Last but not least is my faith and my church community. Faith is what makes everything in my life make sense. I can't help but look at a butterfly wing and be amazed at the Creator. The support and care of my brothers and sisters in my church is an incredible blessing and something I treasure. |
